notes is a multi-channel video installation that engage with acts of recognition, recollection, and refamiliarization through phone footage of my travels in the Philippines, my cousins’, and a closeup following a runner’s legs. The video format highlight visual and sound in an attempt to reconnect to a distant place, deliberately limiting the viewer’s perspective to draw attention to the loss of other sensual cues, focusing on the failure of absolute experience. I liken this to the act of going for a jog. While jogging is primarily a type of exercise for the health of the body, jogging is often what I do to familiarize myself with a place—an effort to survey the landscape while also letting the landscape observe me. Yet this effort of familiarization invariably falls short of reconstituting oneself into place. Because bodies in the diaspora resist categorization, most attempts to find places of belonging seem fallible; thus, this video work is in continuous state of flux, constituted through processes of repetition and revision of movement.
